Successful Students Go to Class

Commit to attending all your classes and completing all your coursework.

Attendance is important and expected. It’s the best way to:

Ensure you access and understand important material
Prepare for tests
Develop good habits that follow you into the job market

You are responsible for all coursework even if you don’t show up. Your instructor may use class participation as part of your final grade. Make sure to review the course syllabus to understand expectations for each class.

If you miss a class:

Try to notify your instructor in advance
Plan to make up the work
Find out what you missed from a classmate or the instructor

COURSE CANCELLATIONS

The college may cancel a class before the start of a term due to low enrollment or for other reasons. Students will not be obligated for tuition and fees of courses that have been cancelled.

The college will notify students by email when a decision has been made to cancel a class; however, students are encouraged to confirm their class schedules in eServices prior to the term start and to replace lost credits in event their schedule has been reduced. This may be important especially for students who are required to maintain a certain credit level for financial aid, loan deferment, insurance or other eligibility.

WEATHER-RELATED CANCELLATIONS

Class meetings may be cancelled because of weather or other unforeseen circumstances that impact the college community. Key information about cancellations will be published on the home page of the college’s website, on Normandale’s Facebook & Instagram pages, and communicated via text message and email through Star Alert Notifications.

INSTRUCTOR CANCELLATIONS

Class meetings may be cancelled because of an instructor’s illness, emergency or professional development activities. When instructors know in advance that class will be cancelled, they may make a classroom or D2L announcement and may give alternate assignments.

Federal regulations require faculty to report attendance information for students who have stopped attending class or those who never attended. A student who is reported to have stopped attending will be assigned a grade of NA or NC for that class, and a student who is reported to have never attended will be assigned a grade of NA or NC. Financial aid may be reduced or cancelled based on student attendance information.

Prior to the course withdrawal deadline, students may visit eServices to withdraw from courses with NA, NW or NC grades. The last date of attendance that was reported by faculty will remain unchanged, so the impact on the student's financial aid award (that occurred when the instructor reported the last date of attendance) for that semester will remain unchanged, as well.

Military obligations, religious observances, pregnancy and parenting, and other circumstances sometimes impact a student’s ability to attend class or complete course requirements. When such circumstances are known in advance, students should connect with their instructors to make alternate arrangements when possible. Students are also encouraged to consult with their academic advisor.
