For Students Whose First Langauge is not English
Lack of English skills will not be a barrier to college admission or participation.
Normandale offers an excellent program through the Department of English called English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to help students prepare for the many English language demands of their future academic career. Our course placement process assesses each student's academic readiness and assigns students to the appropriate course levels at Normandale or helps determine whether the student must first strengthen his or her English language skills in order to maximize the potential for academic success.
A number of factors could be used to determine students’ Reading and English course placements, including high school GPA, standardized test scores, and English language proficiency. During the placement process, students may be asked to answer a few questions to determine if a writing assessment is necessary to evaluate students’ English language skills. Students submit a short writing sample. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) faculty review the sample and assess students' need for EAP courses, which provide language support and address other necessary skills to increase success in college writing and reading.
