PSYCHOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS

The Normandale Psychology Department is offering two $1000 scholarships to encourage students who have completed Introduction to Psychology, with a grade of at least a B, to take a 2000-level Psychology course at Normandale next academic year (Fall or Spring, not Summer).  Details for how to apply for each scholarship are below.  The deadline for both scholarships is typically in April.

Myles E. Johnson Scholarship

The Myles E. Johnson Scholarship is a $1000 scholarship that prioritizes financial need. 

At the end of this Spring semester, students must:

  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.50.
  • Have completed a minimum of 12 credits at Normandale.
  • Have completed Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 1110) at Normandale with a grade of "B" or higher.

To apply, students must:

  • Have completed the online application for the Myles E. Johnson Psychology Scholarship in full.
  • Have completed the FAFSA.
  • Have written and submitted a scholarship essay.

Dr. Myles E. Johnson taught undergraduate and graduate Psychology courses for over 45+ years at various colleges and universities, including Ball State University, Clark College, Sheridan College, and St. Mary's University of Minnesota. He taught at Normandale from 1973 to 2005. During this time, he published research and commentaries in a variety of scholarly and popular sources, on topics such as hypnosis, moral worry, religion, awe, and education. This scholarship is a testimony to his dedication to education, psychological science, and most of all, students.

Psychology Scholarship for Students of Color

The Psychology Scholarship for Students of Color is a $1000 scholarship intended to encourage students of color to further explore the field of Psychology and is intended to help address their underrepresentation in higher-level courses. The scholarship is intended to support a student who wants to take a 2000-level Psychology course at Normandale next academic year (Fall or Spring, not Summer).

At the end of this Spring semester, students must:

  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.00.
  • Have completed a minimum of 12 credits at Normandale.
  • Have completed Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 1110) at Normandale with a grade of "B" or higher.
  • Have completed one other Psychology course at Normandale besides Introduction to Psychology.
  • Self-identify as a member of one or more of the following racial groups: American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian and Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latinx, Middle-Eastern or North African, or Black.

To apply, students must:

  • Have completed the online application for the Psychology Scholarship for Students of Color in full.
  • Have written and submitted a scholarship essay.

Steps to Apply for Each Scholarship

Applications are submitted electronically. To access applications, students should: 

  • Open the link to the Scholarship Portal
  • Scroll down and click "Apply" or "Students."
  • Those who haven't used the portal before may be instructed to sign in with their minnstate.edu email address (using Star ID).
  • A Release of Information must be completed first. This will show up under "Tasks." Students won't be able to see any scholarship applications until this is completed.
  • Students should look for the "Myles E. Johnson Scholarship" and/or "Psychology Scholarship for Students of Color."
